Veteran’s Day 2016
Post 12135 continues the tradition of offering “Buddy Poppies” to be worn in remembrance of those who didn’t return. This Veteran’s Day, post members manned Poppy tables for two days at the Marathon station in Tellico Village and at Ingle’s new store in Lenoir City.
100% of donations raised from the sales of Buddy Poppies goes to the Post 12135 Relief fund to provide support to veterans, their families and to area causes.
The practice of wearing “Buddy Poppies” or “Remembrance Poppies” (as they are called in the UK) began shortly after World War 1 and was inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields” written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
