Tellico Village VFW Announces Student Winners

Student winners of the “Voice of Democracy” contest sponsored by the Tellico Village Veteran’s of Foreign Wars of America include Lenoir City High School student Graysen Halverson (Seen pictured.), who with five classmates received certificates of merit and cash awards. Cody Fine captured the “early bird” award and a cash prize. To compete students were required to submit a recording of an original essay. The students were among thousands across the country participating in the annual contest featuring a $30,000 scholarship awarded to the national winner.
Middle school students submitted written essays to the “Patriot’s Pen” contest. Eighteen students won participation and cash awards. Ruthie Davis, Esmeralda Avalos, Ava McCroskey, Connor Murdock, Kimberly Juarez Saucedo and Shiloh Turnier received merit and cash awards. Carrie Benford won the “early bird” award and a cash award. Teacher Artie Gross won a cash prize for classroom materials because his class submitted the most entries.
More than 90 students participated in the contests. Lenoir City School officials and employees helping implement the contests included Superintendent Dr. Jeanne Barker, Supervisor of Instructional Services Millicent Smith, Tennessee Scholarship Advisor Sean Royston, principals Brandee Hoglund and Charles Orr and others.
Post Commander Tony Newton confirmed that “more than 90 students participated in this years essay contest, and we hope to double that next year”. The “Voice of Democracy” theme for next year is “Is this the country the Founders envisioned?”
