July 2021 Veteran of the Month
Anthony H. Newton was born in Bellmore, NY June of 1939. After 1st grade, he and his Mother moved to Anna Maria, FL. For 2 years, then St. Petersburg, FL where he attended 4th grade at the Florida Military Academy. His remaining primary schooling was at the Bulls Military Academy in Jacksonville, FL., where he graduated in 1957. He then attended Florida State University for 2.5 years and in 1960, volunteered for the U.S. Army in a clerical position. Two years later, Newton applied for Officers Candidate School, where in 1962 he was accepted and transferred to Ft. Benning, GA. It was during his OCS training that he met and married his wife Joy.
For his first tour, Tony was sent to Eritrea, a protectorate of Ethiopia. Here he was assigned to the HHQ company as Postal Officer and Dependent School Logistics Officer. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant, he was then assigned as a Motor Pool Officer.
In 1965 Newton was assigned as an S1 to the 313th Battalion ASA at Ft. Devens, MA. And went with the Battalion to Vietnam the summer of 1966. Here he was promoted to Captain, Communications Officer of the 406th detachment, 1st Brigade in the 101st Airborne Division. Seven months later he was positioned as S3 of Battalion in Nha-Trang, and left Nam in 1967; He was sent to Boot-strap at the University of Omaha to finish his degree in journalism.
Following this, now Major Newton became S1 adjutant at Vent Hills Station, SW of DC, until 1969. From there he transferred to Augsburg, Germany serving 3 years as Command Signal Officer in a theatre security communications company, and then on to Sinop, Turkey as Operational Officer for special collections. From there he returned as a student to the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS., then to the University of Kansas to finish his Masters in Communications, then back to Leavenworth, now Lt. Colonel Newton taught until 1978 .
He was then selected to be Army Fellow in the office of the Director of National Security Agency. One year later Newton was selected for Battalion Command, assigned to the Pentagon, he was responsible for military manpower in his role as Deputy Chief of Staff for operations.
Following this, Newton was selected for the U.S. Army War College in Ft. McNair, VA. And the following year he was assigned Director of Instruction at the Army Security Agency in Ft. Devens, MA. His next assignment, now Colonel Newton was selected for Brigade Command and assigned to the U.S. Army field station in Berlin.
Colonel Newton was then re-assigned for 2 years to the Pentagon as Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, and in 1989 he retired and moved to Sarasota Florida with his wife of 54 years, Joy. He then worked for Lockheed Martin, responsible for contractor job placement in 3 facilities. He worked there until 2006 when they moved to Tennessee and eventually to the Village. Joy had a great deal of influence in selecting Tennessee as their retirement home in that she told Tony, “I followed you around the world for 50 years, all I ask is to retire in a place that has four seasons”. During his career, Colonel Newton received the Bronze Star, 2 Legions of Merit, 5 Meritorious Service Medals, and the Infantry and Airborne Badges. Tony is a Charter member of the VFW at Tellico Village, and served as Commander in 2019-20 where the post achieved All-American status. Tony also is involved as Dock Captain, a member of the solo club, and loves to golf!
