Loyalty Day 2019
VILLAGE VFW POST CELEBRATES NATIONAL LOYALTY DAY
Last Wednesday ( May 1, 2019) afternoon the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) post in Tellico Village celebrated national Loyalty Day at Tanasi Clubhouse with a luncheon and speakers. Almost 30 post members, spouses and guests attended the event produced by post Senior Vice Commander Jon Showers. Featured speakers included Village residents Carl Richgells and Ralph Pubillones. Richgells, a WWII veteran, spoke about his life in a rural Wisconsin town on December 7, 1941 after which he served as a crewman on a U.S. Navy PBY bomber destroying Japanese cargo and troops ships plying the waters between Korea and Japan. Richgels also talked about recent first-hand research he conducted leading to the conclusion that so-called “Millenials” are just as loyal and patriotic as their elders. Publillones (USAF Col. – Ret.), who served as an intelligence officer world wide for almost 30 years, talked in depth about the legal, military and religious aspects and significance of “loyalty.” A mandatory observance for all VFW posts, national Loyalty Day on May 1st was established by Congress in the mid-1950s to counter militaristic annual “May Day” parades held in many Communist countries.
